Wednesday, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed HF 2612, a bill to improve special education and raise teacher salaries, into law. She signed the bill at the Iowa State Capitol Building in the Governor’s Formal office at 1:30 PM.
Governor Reynolds released the following statement before signing HF 2612:
“I’m proud to sign legislation that further strengthens Iowa’s commitment to students, parents, teachers, and schools. This bill will improve special education for students with disabilities and raise salaries for new and experienced teachers – two foundational pillars of a world class education system which is exactly what we strive to provide for every student in our state. High quality teachers and instruction unlock the potential for student success, and this legislation delivers both.”
Iowa’s AEAs responded, saying, “the signing of HF 2612 will forever change Iowa’s AEA system and how it delivers services to the children, families and educators of Iowa. We are grateful to the thousands of advocates who worked tirelessly to educate the public and legislators about what was at stake.”
An Iowa Senator, Pam Jochum, also piled on, saying, “On Tuesday, the Senate Republicans voted to gut Area Education Agencies (AEAs), which are vital to the success of all students, but especially to our children who have special learning needs. Since Senate Republicans’ introduction, the message has been loud and clear across the state: WE DON’T WANT THIS! School administrators, teachers, parents, and students have all been saying the same thing. Republicans pushed out a statement saying that Democrats voted against increasing teachers’ pay. This is a misleading and deceitful statement because this same bill also included gutting the AEA system and underfunding public education for the coming school year.”
