MASON CITY – The Mason City council will meet tonight and send a message to Alliant Energy that their proposed 20% rate hike won’t be well-received by the community.
NIT reported back in October that Alliant was proposing a big rate increase in Iowa. At the time, Alliant filed a rate review with the Iowa Utilities Board. This request proposes to increase Iowa customers’ electric and natural gas rates beginning in October 2024.
“We are proud to deliver safe and reliable service, 24/7 and 365 days a year. This filing reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering reliable, resilient and secure energy to our customers and the communities we serve in Iowa,” Alliant claims.
At a public hearing in Clear Lake in November, Cerro Gordo County Supervisor Chris Watts attended and questioned the board. He reminded citizens that Alliant’s franchise agreement won’t last forever.
“Their franchise agreement will be running out in the next few years with the city of Mason City,” Watts told NIT. “It’s up to the city… MidAmerican energy services a lot of communities in North Iowa. They are 53% cheaper than Alliant Energy.”
