Iowa man faces attempted murder, kidnapping and other charges after victim found shot on roadside

IOWA CITY - A young Iowa man ultimately caught in Chicago is facing attempted murder, kidnapping and other charges after his alleged victim was found along a roadside with a gunshot wound here in the Hawkeye state.

IOWA CITY – A young Iowa man ultimately caught in Chicago is facing attempted murder, kidnapping and other charges after his alleged victim was found along a roadside with a gunshot wound here in the Hawkeye state.

At 2:26 PM on Sunday, July 2, 2023, Iowa City Police and Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area of Mile Marker 93 on southbound Highway 218 for a report of a man on the side of the road suffering from a gunshot wound. The man was transported to an area hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. Through their investigation, Iowa City Police identified a black Nissan Altima believed to be associated with the incident.

Police announced this week that an arrest has been made following the investigation into the above incident.

Lamont’e O’Neal (pictured above via Cook county, Illinois jail), 20, of Cedar Rapids, faces the following charges:

Attempted Murder
First-Degree Robbery (First Count)
First-Degree Robbery (Second Count)
Control of a Firearm by a Felon (First Count)
Control of a Firearm by a Felon (Second Count)
Second-Degree Kidnapping – Armed with a Dangerous Weapon
Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon (First Count)
Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon (Second Count)
Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury

O’Neal is currently in custody in Cook County, Illinois, on unrelated charges. A detainer has been placed on him and he will be extradited to Johnson County to face charges related to the July 2 incident at a later date.
