DES MOINES – A massive fire that destroyed a historic downtown Des Moines building is now under investigation, and police are seeking tips and clues that might give them answers on how or why the fire started.

The Des Moines Police Department, working in conjunction with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, is seeking help from the public obtaining video and photos of the fire that destroyed the Younkers Building on Saturday March 29, 2014.

The initial call regarding the fire came in to the Des Moines Police Communications Center at 12:51 am on the 29th. Authorities are asking anyone that has photos or video of the Younkers Building at 701 Walnut just before or after that time to send them to Des Moines Police Detective Jack Kamerick at, who can also be contacted at 515-237-1495 with information or tips.

Anonymous tips may be submitted through the Polk County Crime Stoppers at 515-223-1400 or on their web site
