The Dickinson county sheriff’s office received a 911 call of a UTV accident on Sunday, August 7, 2022 at 2:28PM.

Authorities say a 14-year-old was driving a 2012 Polaris Ranger 800, owned by Scott Groeneweg of Orange City, southbound on Basswood Lane, rural Spirit Lake, in East Oaks North. The 14-year-old lost control of the UTV. The UTV rolled onto its side and struck a tree. The 14-year-old and a 15-year-old passenger were both ejected from the UTV.
Both were transported to Lakes Regional Healthcare by Ambulance. The 15-year-old was pronounced deceased at the Hospital. The 14-year-old was treated and released from the Hospital with non-incapacitating injuries.
The accident remains under investigation.
Assisting the Dickinson county sheriff’s office on scene were Spirit Lake Police, Spirit Lake First Responders, LRH Ambulance, and the Iowa State Patrol.
