OBIT: Shirley A. Berte

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livermore with Father Merle Kollasch officiating. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Livermore. Visitation will be held from 5 – 7 p.m. on Monday, June 6, 2022 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livermore.

Shirley Ann (Kliegl) Berte was born March 5, 1936, in Cylinder, Iowa, to Roy and Susan (Besch) Kliegl. She grew up in Whittemore and attended Presentation Academy where she graduated in 1954. Following high school, she worked at Iowa State Bank in Algona for a short time.

On June 20, 1956, she was united in marriage to Charles Berte at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Whittemore. To this union they were blessed with four children; Susan (Mark) Bormann of Livermore, Thomas (Sharon) Berte of Livermore, Sheryl (Paul) Jacobson of Ottosen, Carol (David) Edge of Ankeny, 17 grandchildren; Matthew (Nancy) Bormann, Joseph (Val) Bormann, Maria (Joel) Zeman, Amanda (Ryan)Bousquet, Elizabeth Reynolds, Peter (Cassi)Bormann, Anna (Brian) Olson, Calvin (Kelly)Berte, Adam (Katie) Berte, Jacob (Sherri) Berte, Sarah (Matt) Greinert, Bethany Schneider, Nathan (Rachael) Jacobson, Samuel (Alannah) Jacobson, Zachary (Lindsey) Edge, Amy Edge and Ashley Edge and 35 great-grandchildren.

Shirley’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great joy. She enjoyed the many activities they participated in, including ball games, concerts, and dance recitals. Shirley loved to garden; and every year she would plant a large garden filled with a variety of vegetables. When the time came, you could find her busy canning and freezing the produce to enjoy throughout the year. In the evenings you might find her embroidering pillow cases or kitchen towels. Shirley enjoyed taking trips with her family and friends, and going out to lunch and shopping with her girlfriends. She also enjoyed having visitors and always welcomed them with a cup of coffee and baked goods. Shirley was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livermore where she was a lector and Eucharistic minister, a member of the choir and ladies guild. She also enjoyed being part of the Ladies Neighborly Club.

Shirley passed away peacefully on June 2, 2022, at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. She was 86.

Shirley is also survived by sisters, Marilyn Bernhard of Bancroft, and Carol (Tom) Ulses of Algona, sibling-in-laws, Janine Berte of Livermore, Judy Berte of Algona, Edmund (Mary Ann) Berte of Algona, Nicholas (Nancy) Berte of Algona, Delores (Richard) Arndorfer of Bancroft, and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband, Charles; brother, Jerome Kliegl; in-laws, William Bernhard, August (Eleanor) Berte, Adam (Dorothy) Berte, Margaret (Louis) Laubenthal, John Berte, Alfred Berte and JoAnn Berte.
