AMES – The mass shooting epidemic has struck Iowa as a gunman killed himself and two victims tonight in Ames.
Law enforcement confirmed that three people are dead at the Cornerstone church in Ames, Iowa, this evening.
At 6:51 pm on June 2, 2022, the Story County 911 Center received multiple calls from individuals at the Cornerstone Church. A college group was evidently meeting at the church for its weekly meeting. One caller stated a person with a gun in the parking lot of the Cornerstone Church and two other individuals had been shot. Deputies were dispatched at 6:52 pm and arrived at 6:56 pm. An Ames Police Commander who was attending an elders meeting at this location heard the gunfire and responded to the parking lot of the church at approximately the same time as the initial arriving deputies. This tragic event took the lives of two young females.
At 6:59 pm, a deputy on the scene confirmed the shooter was down and had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. This male has been identified as Johnathan Lee Whitlatch, a 33-year-old male from Boone, IA.
