DECORAH — Manure from a dairy applied to land ran off into a stream causing a fish kill, last week, the Iowa DNR says.

The Wednesday morning report of a fish kill about four miles southwest of Decorah sent DNR staff to investigate Dry Run Creek that afternoon.

Following a trail of contaminated water, the DNR traced the fish kill to a dairy owned by Darryl Humpal of Ridgeway. Humpal had land applied manure on a hay field near the creek on Monday. Rainfall Monday night apparently flushed the dairy manure into the creek.

About five miles of stream were affected, but DNR environmental staff found no dead game fish. DNR fisheries staff found large numbers of dead minnows and suckers.

Wednesday and Thursday, Humpal disked the hay field and pumped more than 10,000 gallons of diluted water from the creek to prevent further contamination downstream.

DNR will continue to monitor the cleanup, conduct a fish kill count and consider appropriate enforcement action.

  1. As the liberal corporate owned/managed (more than a few chinese) Would say on CNN -FAKE NEWS– It is urban pollution that has poisoned 750 of Iowas waterways and ground water and NOT OUR SPRAYING OF ROUNDUP ON our farm fields or the dumping of pig shit on our farmland that will eventually flow into Iowas waterways after a good rain (both of which will eventually kill humans and wildlife. Keep pumping your corporate CNN- FAKE NEWS lies – your future generations will surely thank you for your stupitity and greed. Cash your monthly U.S. welfare check yet? That along with your chinese yen your on the verge of greatness in your own little domain.

  2. I am happy to see your slimy excuse that it the sewage plants that have poisioned 750 waterways in Iowa when tests show its FARM RUNOFF – this has also joined other streams eventually flowing into the Mississippi and ending up at its rectum in New Orleans and flowing into the gulf where nothing is living in an area as large as the state of New Jersey – keep pumping your corporate stink and make sure to pee in a nearby creek to help your $$$$$ cause and screw everyone else.

    1. and don’t forget about all the poisons from the cities landfills and sewage plants that flow into the water. government won’t document this because of it’s source coming from the urban area.

  3. Happens every week – this poison also enters our ground water – drinking water ? Say it’s not so. OH it’s just something you will have to learn to live and die with ?

    1. Glad to see you have your happy pants on this Monday. No different than all the pollutants the cities dump into our water from their sewage plant. There’s plenty of poisons in that also
