ACKLEY, IOWA – The sheriff in Hardin county was hospitalized after a training exercise with a K9 officer went wrong.
On March 5, 2017, members of the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office and Ackley Police Department were conducting joint training. This training included working with both K9 Ogon and K9 Lexer. The main focus of the training was traffic stops, narcotic searches, and bite work. During the course of the training exercise, Hardin County Sheriff Dave McDaniel, acting as the perpetrator in the training scenario, took a bite from K9 Ogon. It was during this bite Sheriff McDaniel’s leg twisted and resulted in breaking the leg in three spots. Sheriff McDaniel is undergoing treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
The Ackley Police Department said “this was an unfortunate end to a good training exercise. We cannot fully express our thanks to all those involved who help each other to be better prepared. Officers like the Sheriff and others who came off duty just to help make a difference.”
