MASON CITY – Andy O’Brien came up short in his bid for the at-large city council seat Tuesday night, but was gracious in defeat and thanked everyone who participated in the election process.

We as a city have won today. I wanted to take a moment and thank the citizens of Mason City and my family for allowing me to be part of a remarkable election process. It has been a humbling experience, one that I wont forget. I want to congratulate Paul Adams on a great win, your dedication and hard work prove your the man for the City Council seat. I will support Paul and help him in anyway possible, I ask all the citizens to show him the same respect with tolerance and humility moving forward. Mason City is a great place to live and work! ~Andy
Mr. O’Brien received the most votes in the September 20 special election, with eventual winner Paul Adams second and Max Weaver a close third. O’Brien and Adams emerged from a pool of eight candidates to land on the December 6 run-off ballot. Paul Adams will take office immediately and assume the at-large seat vacated after the July 15 death of Alex Kuhn.
Too little too late as they say. A shame Andy came to his senses only after the game was over. Always liked him but he took his marching orders from the bully in the grungy corner office and look what that got him. A lesson to future candidates to be sure.
Not the point. Council members have to read through, and thoroughly understand, complicated legal language in ordinances, agenda items, state and local contracts, etc. Anybody who can’t communicate any better than that isn’t qualified to serve, or to coach anybody else on anything.
Please speak for yourself. While I see no reason to gloat over Andy’s (lack of) skills with the written language – especially not today – many of us did factor this in when making our mind up.

They know O’B would need the issues explained to him, and they just want to tell him, “Just vote the way we tell you, and you’ll be fine.” They’ll do it again with the next vacancy, wait and see.
