Domestic abuser allegedly strikes again this weekend

MASON CITY – A convicted domestic abuser struck again this weekend, and this time he faces a felony and potential prison time.

Mason City police responded to a domestic incident Sunday evening at 5:43 PM at 917 North Washington Avenue. At the scene, they located 29-year-old Andrew Joseph Beland. As a result of the incident and investigation by police, Beland was arrested on charges of felony first-degree burglary, felony domestic abuse assault involving strangulation, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal violation of a court-imposed no contact order.

Beland was taken to the county jail and held there on $30,000 bond as he awaits court hearings.

Beland was arrested by Mason City police back on July 9, 2016, for first-offense domestic abuse assault while using a weapon and domestic abuse assault involving strangulation. In a deal made with prosecutors in September, he pled guilty only to domestic abuse assault involving strangulation. Judge Karen Salic imposed a suspended 2-year prison sentence, a suspended fine and probation, thereby letting Beland walk free.

As a result of Beland’s latest violent episode, he is accused of violating the no-contact order, which could result in a 7 day jail term. In addition, Beland is accused of violating his probation from the July 9 incident and could face all or part of his prison term and fine.  Beland is also on probation from a July 29 arrest by the MCPD for assault.  He faces probation revocation in that case, as well.

A judge will again decide his fate.

If he violated his parole we should be sent directly to prison. Why should we spend more tax money on a retrail when he had already been found guilty?

I thought Colleen Weiland was up for retention vote in 2016 but she wasn’t on my ballot. Maybe I am not in the right jurisdiction. Are Mason City people the only ones allowed to vote for or against retaining her in office?

Is their a way to find out the names of these idiot judges who keep letting these criminals loose so they can keep committing the same crimes over and over? Those judges should be held responsible for this, too.
