Every UI Pitcher’s Dream – Making the MLB Draft

Of course it is every college player’s dream to make the MLB draft, but 3 out of 5 players from the University of Iowa who made the 2015 draft were pitchers. This is the hope of every college player, to make the draft to the major league, and for the Hawkeyes, sending 3 pitchers up to the big leagues is exciting news. Good pitchers are hard to come by so when you have three who made it to the big time, it says something about the school and the coaching staff.

Hawkeye Players Who Made the 2015 Draft

Whether or not these players actually signed on to the teams who drafted this isn’t really as important as noting that of the five chosen, three were pitchers. It is the most coveted position to play on any level from youth leagues to the major leagues and when you have more than half of your draftees being pitchers, it says something for the scouting and coaching team of the college. Following is a brief summary of the players chosen this year.

Blake Hickman – RHP

Chosen by the White Sox in the 7th Round, Blake Hickman is a right handed pitcher (RHP) who was overall pick number 202.

Nick Hibbing – RHP

Nick Hibbing is also a right handed pitcher and was chosen in the 16th Round as overall pick number 487. He was called up by the Pirates.

Eric Toole – CF

As the 647th overall pick in round #22, Eric Tool is a center fielder. The Rockies chose Toole who will go to the minors to begin his professional career.

Kris Goodman – 3B

The other player of the two who aren’t pitchers is Kris Goodman who plays third base. Chosen in round #32 by the Marlins, Kris will go to the minors after an exciting stint with the Hawkeyes. Goodman was overall pick #956.

Tyler Peyton – RHP

The third right handed pitcher to be drafted in 2015 was Tyler Peyton who was picked in the 33rd Round by the Reds. He was the 985th overall pick and proud to be amongst the five chosen from the Hawkeyes.

The Honor of Being a Hawkeye

As the scouts go out to high schools around the country each year, hundreds of young players hope to make the Hawkeyes who ended their 2015 season in second place in the Big Ten. Few players have the raw talent to be starting pitchers so when you are offered a full ride scholarship to a team as prestigious as the Hawkeyes, it’s often seen as the chance of a lifetime. Those who have had the honor of being awarded sports scholarships by asmscholarships.com know that without this financial assistance, they might never have had this amazing opportunity.

While it is every pitcher’s dream to be drafted to the majors, all positions envision an exciting career on the field. It is what they hoped for, worked for and prayed for and once that magic moment arrives, they know their efforts have been rewarded. Kudos to the Hawkeyes for sending up another five players this year in the 2015 draft.
