Man dies after kayak overturns in Hancock county pit

FOREST CITY – A man was airlifted to Mercy Hospital Saturday and later died after his kayak overturned and he was submerged in water.

According to Hancock County Sheriff Scott Dodd, his agency received a 911 call Saturday shortly after noon, reporting that a man was underwater after his kayak overturned inside the Torkelson Pits Conservation Area near Forest City.

After a search, a male – later identified as Timothy Brown Jr., a criminal justice student and football player at Waldorf College – was found and pulled from about 12 feet of water, about 50 feet from shore, at about 2:09 PM. He was transported by Mercy Life Flight to Mason City’s Mercy Hospital.  Brown passed away due to the incident.

Several agencies assisted the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office in the search for the man, including Forest City Ambulance, Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, Britt Police Department, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Iowa Underwater Search and Rescue.
