Senator Ragan: “Outrage” that Iowa has slipped to #37 in nation in per student funding

campusDES MOINES – The 2015 legislative session opened Monday and State Senator Amanda Ragan of Mason City says her top priorities will be helping to improve K-12 education, make college more affordable, support job training and bring attention to issues around children’s health services.

Ragan believes a number of these measures support working class families. “If we help Iowa families become financially secure, our economy will continue to thrive and our future will be more certain.”

Ragan says the current makeup of Iowa’s state government means ideas need support from both Republicans and Democrats to become law. “That’s why I’ll focus on proposals with broad public support. I think we can all agree we need more good jobs, great schools, affordable child care, health care, and housing, and to be able to retire with dignity.”

Ragan said one area Democrats and Republicans must agree on in the 2015 session is state support for local students.

“It is an outrage that Iowa has fallen to 37th in the nation in per student funding,” Ragan said. “Great local schools help our communities attract new businesses and new residents. When it comes to support for our local schools, we need to return to the pro-education approach that built our state.”

Senator Ragan is an Assistant Majority Leader, the Chair of the Health and Human Services Budget Subcommittee and serves as the Vice Chair of the Agriculture and the Human Resources Committees. She also serves on the Appropriations, Natural Resources & Environment, Rules & Administration, and Veterans Committees.

How can this be??? It doesn’t make sense. Maybe we should go without some of the “in service” periods some schools have and stick to teaching the children.

Where does Iowa income rank? Probably less than 37th?
Give the money to private schools. They seem to get much more from less.
It is not a money problem

I remember when Iowa was #1 or #2 in literacy in the entire nation. We were always at or near the top. What happened?

Not to worry – due like always and raise pooperty taxes.

Maybe instead of throwing more money at the problem, she should address the sub-standard teaching. When our kids come in at or close to the bottom when it comes to learning the problem is not more money. Dis-band the teachers union and demand that they do their job for the money they earn.
