MASON CITY – An ex-convict facing second offense drunk driving charges decided he wouldn’t come back to court, and cops finally caught up with him months after a warrant for his arrest was issued.
Aaron Lee Nixon, age 29, was stopped by a Cerro Gordo deputy on April 29 at about 2:00 AM right outside his apartment complex at the 1000 block of South Illinois Avenue. The officer discovered that Nixon has a revoked driver’s license. He was arrested and his vehicle was impounded. He was soon released from jail pending court dates.
Two days earlier, on April 27, 2014, an erratic driver was spotted near 9th Street and Elm Drive. The driver, who was Nixon, was believed to have collided with the curb and or a fixed object, crippling his car. The car was allegedly driven in its severely-damaged state through a yard and parked illegally back on the traveled portion of the road. Officers arrived and found Nixon behind the wheel. Field Sobriety tests were conducted before Nixon was informed he would be arrested for operating while intoxicated second offense. Nixon then allegedly resisted arrest before he was transported to the Cerro Gordo County Jail. He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting a jury trial on February 20th on the interference charge.
Nixon was due in court in October for the drunk driving offense case but never appeared. A judge issued a warrant for his arrest and he was finally caught Sunday and taken to the county jail. He is being held on bond until he appears in court on January 9.
Nixon is a convicted felon who spent a number of months in the Fort Dodge Correctional Facilty on drug charges and other infractions.
