Iowa man followed after crashing car in snowy ditch; arrested for drunk driving

SPENCER – An Iowa man allegedly tried to flea the scene of a drunk driving accident but was busted with the help of a citizen who followed him.

James Alan Mumm, age 50 of Everly, Iowa, was driving his 1992 Chevy Truck east in the on 340th Street in Clay county on Christmas Eve when he crossed the center of the road and entered the north ditch. The pickup rolled onto its top and came to rest facing east.

A reporting party who called police witnessed the male driver, later identified as Mumm, get picked up in a gold-colored vehicle and leave the scene. The vehicle was later located and followed into Everly by the reporting party. Upon investigation by a Clay County Deputy, it was found that Mumm lived in Everly and upon making contact with him, it was found he had consumed alcoholic beverages. Hewas run through field sobriety tests at that time.

Mumm was placed under arrest and was transported to the Clay County Jail without incident. He was charged with Failure to Maintain Control and second offense operating while intoxicated.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Spencer Police Department, Everly Fire and Rescue and Bud’s Service.
