MASON CITY – In a clear sign of the economic vitality in Mason City, a used car lot has left North Monroe Avenue, to be replaced with – a liquor store.
City Hall in Mason City has confirmed that work is now underway to renovate the building at 18 North Monroe Avenue, the former home of Sid’s Gas Station and later, Mason City Auto, which recently abruptly moved out.
“We have received a permit to remodel the building and the plans indicate it will be a liquor store,” Chief Building Official Curt Suave told NIT.
Work has already been completed on the existing structure. The parking lot is being fixed, and what appears to be a drive-up window has been installed on the North End (no pun intended) of the building. This would mirror the same amenity that is offered at Northside Liquor, the city’s other stand-alone liquor store, that seems to be busy all the time. The deed to 18 North Monroe is owned by the same outfit that owns the deed at 1303 North Federal Avenue – Zayn Properties, LLC – home to Northside Liquor. 18 North Monroe is owned by Euphrates, LLC, Mr. Suave said.
“Changes to the exterior will include ADA compliant entrance and parking, interior changes will include the addition of new counters, cooler, relocated 2nd exit and an ADA compliant restroom,” Mr. Suave continued.
There was no immediate word as to the fate of the coin laundry, located on the side side of the building. It seems to have been out of operation for some time.

Got a feeling the cops are going to be there quite often.
@Anonymous-the cops are already there a lot. What a damn shame, all those fine old houses have been turned into low rent housing and it shows.
New slum area. Drive by there about every night to watch and take my kid to baseball. There is a house a couple houses south of the old Cenex the nice one with the couch on the porch. A group of kids there boxing in the front yard all the time.
First of all “you” didn’t do squat. Deinstitutionalization occurred because of collective disgust with how poor farms and asylums were run. I agree about procreation and welfare being incompatible, but your tone is that of a fat white racist who had relative good fortune in life. The answer is simply requiring Norplant to receive benefits. Don’t go any further than that.
where did he run to if hes so nasty? Did the city run him out of town?
The jock that owns cennex also owns the new licker store property – and as for that wheelman/mc auto sales 24% interest per year-buy her pay here -business is so good we bought another wrecker for repo – Life is great at litter lizard lick.
Where did the car lot move to? Dalane ran a good shop hope hes still in business.
That’s funny right there! MC auto sales is a rip off. The question should be how much did city hall give him to move?
@Anonymous-Most of the vehicles there were not his. They belonged to Wheelman Auto.
Its his responsibility to make sure those cars that he buys run and are safe to be driven on the highways. I would think if he wants a good name he would comply by that. I knew of a salesman years ago who got killed test driving one of his own vehicles which in the end his family won a huge lawsuit. He might want to think of that.
Hyvee had a liquor store on Monroe for years
@Anonymous-yes they did, on South Monroe in the strip mall. Not in a residential area.
LVS, you are showing your wisdom again….. there are many businesses in the immediate area.
@Anonymous-So are you. Body shops and tree services are not liquor stores.
LVS….The whole block is commercial including Habitat to the east, Cenex and Mercy (former Snells) to the south. The 3 blocks to the south is commercial except for 5 or 6 Hardy rentals. The 6 blocks to the north are commercial. Not a residential area even though 6 or so houses are within view. Now 1316 N Jefferson for example would be considered a residential area and I agree would not be an appropriate place to have this business.
I have to agree….body’s shops and tree service businesses are not liquor stores…very profound!
Those Pakistani’s aren’t stupid. They make money off of dysfunctional Americans and assist in the overall decline of our communities through supply and demand. Who needs Al Quada when you can defeat them the legal way by their own vices? Hey, more power to them. Americans in that condition deserve to be defeated.
@Philly-It sure doesn’t hurt that our taxes set them up in business. Low interest 2% start up loans and no taxes for 10 years. If American citizens could get that we all would own a business.
How do you know they are not American citizens?
@Anonymous-were you born stupid or did you have to work at it?
Well, in LVS’s narrow little mind (emphasis on little), if you look “different” and “talk funny” you can’t possibly be a ‘murican.
Example number 287,492 of dumbass statements made by LVS.
LVS–
Those Pakistanis are self-made. Several of them have college degrees, yet work hands on in the family business to try to build it up.
They are doing nothing different than HyVee, Casey’s, or KumNGo.
@rahmbo-I never said they didn’t work hard. So do thousands of other people in the country but, they don’t get the breaks from our government like these people do. They just pay the taxes.
And my point is they are peddlers of poison.
It’s part of Mason City’s booze zones.
Good one… 🙂
Just what is needed.Easy access to alcohol in that area. The police might as well put in a substation there.
That made me laugh! Yes, I agree, a police substation is a good idea!
Cenex sells liquor less than a block away. This seems like a non-issue to me.
Well the welfare bused people get a break !
Alcohol is not drug because it’s legal. Didn’t you know that? It was common knowledge when I grew up. Pot on the other hand is drugs and those people need to go to jail.
Sweet! The soup line is about 4 blocks away! Nothin like a little nip after a hot meal!
Nice…walking distance to the Transition Center just down the road and in an area riddled with more than enough problems.
