MASON CITY – As a reminder to citizens, the Alternate Side Parking Ordinance and Emergency Snow Route are in effect and will remain in effect until further notice.

Snow is in the forecast, with a 70% chance tonight and up to 2-4 inches possible.

Due to the amount of snow remaining along the side of the road and curbs, and the forecast for additional snow, the Ordinance will remain in effect.

During this time that the Alternate Side Parking Ordinance is in effect, the following general provisions shall apply:

  • Parking shall be permitted on the odd numbered side of the street on odd numbered days of the month.
  • Parking shall be permitted on the even numbered side of the street on even numbered days of the month.
  • People moving their vehicle(s) from one side of the street to the other side must do it between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. the night before.
  • On cul-de-sacs bearing consecutive numbers, parking is prohibited according to the schedule for the street to which it connects.
  • During alternate side parking, signs prohibiting parking at all times on one entire side of the street only shall not be enforced and alternate side parking regulations shall be in effect.
  • Alternate side parking regulations shall have no effect on streets where parking is prohibited on both sides.
  • The Emergency Snow Route, which includes 1st Street NW from Monroe Avenue to Pierce Avenue will also be in effect at this time. No parking is allowed on 1st Street NW from Monroe Avenue to Pierce Avenue until further notice.

  1. We get a inch of fluffy snow and we send out the plows at all hours of the day and night? It will all be gone in 2 to 3 weeks, let the drivers go back to playing cribbage at the shop, it would be much cheaper for the taxpayers burried in overtime pay.

  2. people are confused as there has been no announcement since last Wednesday and the plows were not out on the weekend at all. There was a notice in this Mornings GLOB but that is to late for the kids who live on our street. There are five cars that have tickets on them this morning. They were put on at 4:45 AM. Now, this does not affect me but I know those kids don’t make much money and it is hard on them. The other thing is, the plows need to sow down and obey the speed limits just like everyone else. They are going so fast in the residential neighborhood that they are throwing snow on the sidewalks and driveways that are already shoveled.

    1. If you go to the City web page there is an image on the left side of the page that gives you the status of alternate side parking. It’s also color coded: red=in effect green=not in effect. I think it’s a pretty safe bet that if you get the code red message that alternate side parking is in effect and you haven’t gotten one since that it is NOT in effect, it’s still in effect. With all the ways there are to get notices about alternate side parking, there is no reason anyone should be parked incorrectly. Personally, I don’t know why alternate side parking isn’t always in effect in the winter.

      1. @Anonymous-I have code red and the last message I received was last week on Wednesday. They have been pretty bad about getting them out this year. When you don’t see plow for two or three days you kind of think they are done. I agree that it should be in force all the time. That was the way it was originally set up. I was on the committee that set it up but then a few people squawked and they changed it to the way it is today.

        1. LVS, they notify you when alternate side parking goes into effect. They notify you when it isn’t in effect any longer. I don’t want a notification from them that nothing has changed. Are you expecting a notification that the prior notification is still in effect?

          1. Of course not. But, if they are not going to plow for a few days then take it off and put it back on when they are going to start. Either that or put it on and leave it on. That would save a lot of confusion. That was the reason we set it up that way when it started.

  3. It doesn’t matter either way the plows still hit your car or mail box’s and if you don’t look over your shoulder they will plow your ass down too! Just wait until that lawsuit happens.

    1. I’ve heard some of the plow drivers agree with you. Apparently, people think that ASP is not in effect so they park on both sides of the street. Yesterday and today they kept getting hemmed in by parked cars and having to back down the street.

  4. I don’t think it makes any difference, snow plow hit my neighbors car last week and it was parked correctly.

  5. That is strange. I usually receive a text telling me it is in effect. I didn’t get one lats week telling me that it was not in effect but there were no plows out up here for two days.
