AMES, Iowa – Over 1,000 Cyclone fans showed up at Hilton Coliseum Thursday evening to pay their respects to Johnny Orr and his family. Orr, Iowa State’s all-time winningest coach in men’s basketball, and one of the school’s most popular figures, died on Tuesday at the age of 86.
The enormous turnout was no surprise. Coach Orr was beloved by all. Friends, colleagues and players reminisced throughout the evening telling their favorite Johnny stories.
Many Cyclone fans who never even met Coach Orr were there to honor him, which also isn’t surprising. His infectious personality was a gift for all Cyclone fans. Everybody felt a special bond with Johnny, and if he called you “Coach,” you were a friend.
Thank you, Coach Orr. You will never be forgotten.
