MASON CITY – In yet another North End traffic stop, three men were arrested by sheriff’s deputies on various crimes.

Thursday evening at about 8:21 PM, Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s deputies stopped a vehicle driven by Scott Allen North, age 45 of Mason City. North was arrested for driving while barred and his vehicle was impounded. According to court records, Mr. North was taken to small claims court last year by a local church for not paying daycare fees. Then this year, he and his wife were thrown out of their rental unit and the landlord, Russ Hardy, sued them in small claims court for over $3,000 in back rent and damage to the property. They had been sued before by another landlord and lost that case as well, owing thousands in that case as well. In October, Mr. North’s wife, Jessica, filed a Petition for Relief from Domestic Abuse in Cerro Gordo county court and the petition was granted.

A passenger in the vehicle, Michael Ray Chavez, age 43 of Mason City and a convicted felon who owes Iowa courts thousands of dollars, was arrested on a warrant for interference with official acts. He plead guilty Friday and was assessed a $250.00 fine.

Another passenger, Paul Eugene Nieman, age 46 of Mason City, was arrested for possession of unlabled prescription drugs. A few hours after being taken to the jail, Mr. Niemen was involved in a jailhouse altercation with another inmate, Shane Lynn Godden, age 37, who was in jail after running away from the Beje Clark halfway house. Nieman and Godden were both charged with disorderly conduct.

  1. Don’t feel sorry for the Hardy’s. They are slum landlords and their tenants live in squalor. He is rich because of the horrible living conditions of the poor.

  2. I am surprised that Hardy did that. he is usually smarter than to waste his money/ My dad always said you can not get blood out of a turnip. If these people were honest they wouldn’t be in the shape they are in. He will never see his money and they don’t care.

    1. I doubt if they are Socialist– they wouldn’t know how to spell it… It’s just plain bad DNA… And generation after generation of families committing the same crimes… All u have to do is look at that last guy– the one with the blue eyes– One blue this way and one blue that way!!! We have such a mix in this town. 1-2% upper class, about 15% upper middle, the ever shrinking middle class about 30% and the rest are low and then the poverty level…. We keep adding to the low end as more imports from Chicago, Detroit, LA and other metro high crime areas move here. The number one reason they come– we have the best social services in the midwest…. Lots are moving to Northwood too. They can get free housing for 2 years in one of the programs up there….And,what happened, one of them murdered a local woman– his girlfriend…. Not sure what to do… but the police are working their tails off and the courts are letting people go thru the revolving door. And, Judge Colleen Weiland, well, should not be on the bench… She is consistently letting these folks with rap sheets longer than their arms just walk right out with a fine and by the way, which never gets paid…and the cycle repeats itself…
