MASON CITY – A man who was apparently out can collecting got an unwelcome visit by cops early Tuesday.

Tuesday morning shortly after 6:00 AM, police received a call from a nearby resident of Hy-Vee Drugstore, 875 4th Street SW, saying that they had spotted a white car in the parking lot of the store and believed that the person inside the car was stealing empty cans. The car had left and was going down sixth street.

Police arrived and stopped the car.  One person, Terry Alvin Thompson, age 54, was arrested and taken to the Cerro Gordo County Jail.  Thompson was charged with 3rd Degree Theft and Diving Under Suspension. He was released on his own recognizance today after being seen by the Magistrate.

Emergency dispatchers told police that someone was en-route to to pick up the white car after Thompson was arrested.  At 7:00 AM, two males were seen putting a bag of cans into the trunk of the white car and driving off.

Thompson is facing a jury trial on January 22, 2014, for delivery of methamphetamine after an alleged incident this past June where the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office brought the charge.  He has plead not guilty.

Thompson’s buddies arrive to take the can car away. Hopefully the donut tire held up on the drive home.
