DES MOINES – An Iowa political group called upon Iowans to to celebrate the LGBTQ community and offered resources for support.
“Today, October 11, marks National Coming Out Day; a day to celebrate our LGBTQ+ friends, family and neighbors while also recognizing the challenges the queer community continues to face,” according to a statement from Progress Iowa.
“All Iowans, regardless of gender or sexual identity, deserve love and support — and deserve support from their elected officials. Unfortunately, many of our state’s elected officials choose not to recognize queer Iowans, legislating against their well-being by taking away basic human rights.
“Today, and every day, we celebrate LGBTQ communities across the state,” Matt Sinovic, Executive Director of Progress Iowa. “Governor Reynolds and other elected officials across the state need to protect the most vulnerable — but instead choose to take away basic rights like gender-affirming healthcare which saves lives.”
