Public support for marijuana legalization hits record high

hemp marijuanaA new Gallup poll released Tuesday indicates a record number of Americans are in favor of legalizing marijuana.

According to the poll, 58 percent of the public supports the legalization of marijuana, while 39 percent opposes it.  When Gallup first asked the question back in 1969, only 12% of Americans favored legalization.  “A sizable percentage of Americans (38%) this year admitted to having tried the drug, which may be a contributing factor to greater acceptance”, Gallup reported.

Americans age 65 and older are against marijuana legalization, but every younger age group favors it.

Along party lines, 65% of Democrats support legalizing marijuana, compared with 35% of Republicans and 62% of independents (up from 50 percent last year).

The poll was conducted Oct. 3-6 with a random sample of 1,028 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states.

During ww2 the old Thomas Machine Shop was a hemp growing plant used to make rope.

hey lets legalize prostitution also. Tax it and enjoy. It goes on all the time in m.c. and other towns and if you don’t realize it you have your head in the sand.

I agree that there’s a place for legal prostitution (MINUS the pimps, who end up with most of the money). It’s been shown that sexual assaults are lower in areas where prostitution is legal. It’s going on anyway at our local truck stops and rest areas. Why not make it safer for both men and women (disease prevention, eliminating physical attacks on women). There will always be the need, and there will always be willing participants. I find this much less objectionable than women who “dance” in public places for all to see.

In my opinion it is a lot safer for you than alcohol. Does not cause the problems to society that alcohol creates. The only bad thing I’ve ever heard about marijuana is that it is a gateway drug. I believe the only way it is a gateway drug is because you have to purchase it from a drug dealer who also pushes other more dangerous drugs. Take it out of the drug dealers hands, regulate it, tax it and I believe it would be a great moneymaker for our government and a much safer alternative than alcohol. Just my opinion.

Society as a whole will eventually destroy itself. I have no doubt about it. Guys wanting to change their sex to be a girl, girls changing their sex wanting to be a guy, men marrying men and women marrying women, people getting arrested for having sex with animals, the generation of parents who now think it is just fine to be their kids’ buddy and by them alcohol on the weekends, parents getting mad at the school because their kid screwed up instead of teaching responsibility to their offspring in the first place like the parents of earlier generations did……music changing from Chubby Checker in the 50s, to the Beatles and Elvis in the 60s, to the 70s bands like the Steve Miller Band, to the hair bands of the 80s, to the garbage grundge of the 90’s, the infusion of rap which glorifies everything from killing cops, to raping women, and smoking marijuana like they are candy cigarettes……to Miley Cyrus simulating sex with someone dressed up as an animal. People suing each other over anything they possibly can, people more worried about keeping up with their neighbors and taking care of their own family……the multi-billion dollar a year drain on the health care system called “obesity” that we all pay for yet we can’t bring up because it is “mean.” Illegal aliens flooding into our country wreaking havoc on everything from the local economy, to the crime rate, to the health care system, to bringing even more drugs across the border.

Yes, by all means….what is one more stupid thing to add to this already crazy and out of control nation we live in now. Let’s all live like Spicole on the movie “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” Pot is all fun and games. I can’t wait until the day this crap is legalized and I get to walk down town and watch all the stoners eating their chips and laughing as they waste their life away and as they decide they need something more than marijuana to give them that buzz. It will be a sad day if that happens, and I, for one…..will long for days gone by.

Ben what a sad outlook on life you have. It isn’t really all that bad.

Or grow Hemp and start a new recovery in the manufacturing industries and put more farm land into use. As it does not require the best land to grow. Could wean the farmers off the dole.

@Lie-There used to be a lot of hemp around here. You can still find it growing wild in some ditches and along the railroad tracks.

I would sure like some to ease the pain. However, I guess I have just heard to many bad things about it over the years. I think it is just another way for the government to tax the public. They have lost a lot of revenue over the last few years on the tobacco issue. I wonder what the insurance people think about this. They are the ones who drove the war on tobacco.

From what I hear, marijuana like anything else, used in moderation and with some common sense, can be an enjoyable experience. Plus it has medicinal uses. I guess since I’m 65, I’m against it, but I sure could use some for what ails me, bummer.

It will most likely be legal in the next 5 years. If the government can make money off it and it doesn’t kill off taxpayers too quickly, they will legalize it and tax the living crap out of it.
