DES MOINES — Iowans will be able to properly dispose of unused and expired over-the-counter and prescription medications Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at various locations across the state.
The federal Drug Enforcement Agency is holding the national one-day collection event. “We support this event to promote proper management and prevent abuse, unintentional poisonings and to protect water quality,” said Tom Anderson with the DNR.
Medications can pose the risk of accidental ingestion if left in the house. Disposing medications down the toilet or drain can potentially contaminate rivers and lakes, as most wastewater treatment plants and septic systems are not able to remove pharmaceutical chemicals.
Because the Oct. 26 event is being supervised by law enforcement, drugs considered controlled substances will be accepted.
