Washington, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) announced Wednesday that fourteen Iowa Community Health Centers will receive grants totaling $1,571,047 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The funds are made available by the Affordable Care Act, and will be used to expand outreach and enroll uninsured patients and residents into affordable health insurance coverage options. The Iowa Primary Care Association will receive a portion of the funds to provide for additional training and technical assistance at all of Iowa’s community health centers. In his role as Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Harkin played a pivotal role in the Senate passage of the Affordable Care Act. He also serves as chair of the Senate panel that funds health initiatives and has long been a champion for community health centers.

“Community health centers play a critical role in Iowa, providing health care for thousands who lack adequate health insurance,” said Harkin. “They are a lifeline to Iowans who may have lost a job or are struggling to recover from the economic downturn and provide imperative services for people who need medical care and have nowhere else to turn. I have long fought to support the creation of community health centers across the state because I know these facilities provide crucial health care for families in need, while at the same time creating good jobs in our community. I congratulate these community health centers on receiving today’s grants and look forward to improving access to health care through the Affordable Care Act for Iowans who lack access to affordable, comprehensive health insurance.”

Wow, just think how the 100 million the Pres. just spent on his African vacation would help heath care. Instead we rob Social Security etc to fund this heathcare. We take away from the Armed Forces, close the White House to tours. When will we ever wake up.
