MASON CITY – The Supreme Court ruling that struck down much of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was celebrated Wednesday evening in Mason City.
An enthusiastic crowd of several dozen listened to speeches, held hands and sang in a gleeful display. The court’s ruling proclaimed that same-sex couples that are legally married shall be entitled to the same treatment under federal law as their opposite-sex married couples.
Dean Genth of Mason City told the crowd that “it’s been a big day, a historic day, for the United States of America.”
“Ding dong, DOMA is dead,” State Representative Sharon Steckman declared.
Republicans are already mounting challenges to the ruling.
