Police investigating Santa Monica shooting

SANTA MONICA, Calif., June 11 (UPI) — Police in Santa Monica, Calif., said they were looking for a gunman after two people were shot near Santa Monica College Tuesday morning.

The Tuesday shooting followed a shooting rampage in Santa Monica on Friday that left six people dead, including the gunman, but police said there did not appear to be a connection.

KTLA, Los Angeles, reported the Tuesday shooting happened just a few blocks from the campus. Two Hispanic men were taken away in an ambulance, but their conditions were not immediately known, the report said.

The shooter approached the men on foot, then fled in a car. KTLA said he was described as a Hispanic man about 5-foot-7, weighing about 180 pounds and wearing a white shirt with red stripes and blue shorts.

Students were back at Santa Monica College in California Monday amid increased security following the Friday shooting spree, officials said.

The library where many students sought refuge, and where at least 70 rounds were fired by the suspect, remained closed, KABC-TV, Los Angeles, reported.

Police have identified the Friday gunman as John Zawahri, 23, but say his motives in the shooting rampage are still unclear.
