CHANGCHUN, China, May 27 (UPI) — A Chinese man was sentenced to death for killing a baby that he found in the back seat of a car he stole, a court announced Monday.
The Changchun Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Zhou Xijun, 48, to death for the infant’s death, as well as five years in prison for stealing the vehicle, China’s Xinhua news agency reported.
Zhou was also ordered to pay an $8,065 fine for the theft and $2,793 to the family of the baby for economic losses.
On March 4, Zhou stole a parked sports utility vehicle and drove away, Xinhua said. He later discovered the baby in the back seat of the vehicle and strangled it to death. Zhou then buried the baby in the snow.
Zhou turned himself in the day after police launched a search for him and the infant.
