Republican leaders press Obama to meet with border enforcement union

WASHINGTON, May 26 (UPI) — Two Republican legislators criticized President Barack Obama in a letter for failing to meet with unionized U.S. immigration and customs officers.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., wrote their objections to the exclusion of the opinions of 7,000 immigration and customs officers “from the negotiations surrounding immigration reform” in a letter dated May 23, the Washington publication The Hill reported Friday.

The lawmakers wrote three months ago to the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement Council requesting a meeting with the administration to “share their firsthand concerns over the breakdown of interior enforcement” and are yet to receive an invitation.

A letter from border security guards Monday warned Congress the 800-page Senate immigration bill, currently under debate, would create a surge in illegal entries by failing to secure the borders before granting provisional legal status to illegal immigrants, The Hill said.
