Florida waiting for Powerball winner to come forward

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla., May 20 (UPI) — Lottery officials in Florida are waiting for the person holding a winning Powerball ticket worth $590.5 million to come forward.

The ticket was purchased at a Publix supermarket in Zephyrhills in the days before Saturday’s winning numbers were called, ABC News reported.

Monday was the earliest the ticket holder was able to come forward, as the Florida’s lottery headquarters in Tallahassee were closed over the weekend.

The winner has 60 days to claim the prize as a lump sum, which will be worth about $278 million after taxes, or 180 days if the prize is taken in installments.

Meanwhile, residents of Zephyrhills, a town of about of 13,337 people, say they’re excited to find out who the winner is.

“Who ever it is, I will be glad to see if we know them or anything like that,” resident Brian Miller said.

“I heard some 26-year-old girl won,” resident Gary Cooper said.
