Casey Anthony goes to bankruptcy court

TAMPA, Fla., March 4 (UPI) — Casey Anthony appeared in public, for the first time in more than two years, at her Tampa, Fla., bankruptcy hearing Monday.

She waded through a mob of reporters and photographers who awaited her at the federal court house, offering no response to shouted questions, ABC News reported.

Anthony, 26, has been unemployed for four years and was acquitted in 2011 in the death of her daughter Caylee. She is being sued for defamation by Zenaida Fernandez Gonzalez for falsely telling police a nanny with a similar name had kidnapped her daughter.

On Feb. 5, lawyers for Gonzalez filed a motion to transfer Anthony’s bankruptcy case — the result of which could cause the defamation case to be dropped — to Orlando. Anthony’s lawyers had requested the proceedings take place in Tampa because she is in danger in Orlando due to public outrage over her 2011 acquittal, Tampa Bay Online reported. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge K. Rodney May turned down Gonzalez’s request.

Anthony filed for Chapter 7 personal bankruptcy Jan. 25 in Tampa, declaring assets of less than $1,100 and debts of more than $792,000. The filing includes 15 pages of claimants, the largest claim from her defense attorney, Jose Baez, who says she owes him $500,000, ABC News reported.
