Cyclones Rally To Beat Yale, 80-70

AMES, Iowa – Will Clyburn scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half to help Iowa State (10-3, 0-0) rally from an 11-point second-half deficit to defeat Yale (4-10, 0-0), 80-70 Tuesday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
Clyburn was one of six Cyclones in double figure scoring, as Iowa State increased its homecourt winning streak to 15 games, tying for the fifth-best streak in school history.

Melvin Ejim chipped in with his fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 boards and Tyrus McGee came off the bench to score 14 points behind a trio of 3-pointers.

A rough first half put Iowa State in a bind early, as the Cyclones were down by as many as 12 points in the opening period.

Iowa State struggled mightily on offense, shooting just 25.9 percent in the first half. ISU didn’t make a field goal in the final 7:48 minutes of the first half, as the Bulldogs went into the break with a 35-27 lead.

Yale increased its lead to 11 points (43-32) early in the second half on a Matt Townsend basket.

The Cyclones cut the lead to four points after a Clyburn 3-point play to make it 51-47 Yale with 10:56 left in the game. Yale answered with a basket by Michael Grace to go back up six points shortly after.

Iowa State picked up the pressure with a full-court press and rattled off an 11-2 run to take its first lead of the second half, 58-55, after a McGee trey from the corner with 8:35 left in the game.

After a pair of Yale free-throws cut the lead back to one, Georges Niang converted a 3-point play to put ISU back up 61-57 with 7:23 left to play.

Iowa State was still clinging to a three-point lead until mounting a crucial 9-2 run to go up 75-65 with 3:58 left in the contest. Ejim scored four points and McGee converted a 3-point play off a steal and lay-in to finally give the Cyclones some cushion.

The Iowa State lead never got below seven points the rest of the way.

Iowa State outrebounded Yale, 42-39, the 12th opponent ISU has outrebounded this season in 13 games. The Cyclones are now the only team in the nation to score at least 70 points in every game this season.

Iowa State begins Big 12 play on Jan. 9, traveling to Kansas.
