WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

What’s next: The NIACC women’s basketball team (8-6 overall, 1-0 in ICCAC) returns to action Saturday at No. 7 Kirkwood (13-3, 2-0). Game time is set for 1 p.m.

Also, the Lady Trojans play at Iowa Central (9-3, 1-1) on Jan. 9 and host Iowa Lakes (5-11, 1-2) on Jan. 12.

Last time out: NIACC placed third at the Illinois Central Tournament in East Peoria, Ill. Dec. 28-30. The Lady Trojans beat No. 13 South Suburban College 68-55, lost to No. 8 Illinois Central 76-56 and topped No. 1 Lake Michigan College 64-61.

Chelsey’s in charge: Freshman guard Chelsey Jacox (Plymouth, Minn.) leads the Lady Trojans with 62 assists (2nd in ICCAC) and 40 steals (3rd in ICCAC). She also averages 12.7 points per game (6th in ICCAC).

Block party: Freshman post Lashae Brooks (Nett Lake, Minn.) leads team with 37 blocks (3rd in ICCAC). She blocked five shots against Lake Michigan at the Illinois Central Tournament (Dec. 30) and also blocked five shots in the ICCAC opener against Marshalltown (Dec. 12).

Among the leaders: Freshman guard Lateeka Thompson (Burnsville, Minn.) averages 13.8 points per game (4th in ICCAC), has 40 steals (3rd in ICCAC), 40 assists (8th in ICCAC) and averages 7.0 rebounds per game (8th in ICCAC) … Allysa Meyer (Rockwell) has 34 steals (5th in ICCAC) … Kadejah Young (Minneapolis) has 32 steals (6th in ICCAC).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

What’s next: The NIACC men’s basketball team (10-4 overall, 0-1 in ICCAC) returns to action Monday at the Coe College junior varsity in Cedar Rapids. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Also, the Trojans play at Iowa Central (8-6, 0-1) on Jan. 9 and host Iowa Lakes (7-4, 2-1) on Jan. 12.

Last time out: NIACC dropped a 128-72 decision to No. 11 (NJCAA Division I) Indian Hills on Dec. 18 in Ottumwa.

League leaders: Sophomore guard Chris Davis (Colorado Springs, Col.) averages 20.9 points per game and has 47 3-point goals, which leads the ICCAC in both categories. Davis has 722 career points and 108 career 3-point goals. He has 55 steals, which is second in the ICCAC and fourth among NJCAA Division II players.

Josiah Lee (Peyton, Col.) leads the ICCAC with 58 steals, which is second among all NJCAA Division II players.

Fantastic freshman: David Humphries (Adelaide, Australia) averages 17.0 points per game (4th in ICCAC) and 8.3 rebounds per game (2nd in ICCAC). Humphries has 62 assists (3rd in ICCAC) and 38 steals (3rd in ICCAC).

WRESTLING

What’s next: The NIACC wrestling team returns to action Saturday at the William Penn Open in Oskloosa, Iowa. The tournament starts at 9 a.m.

The Trojans wrestle at the Central College Invitational on Jan. 12 and wrestle their first dual meet of the season on Jan. 15 at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.

Top of the heap: Sophomore Basil Minto (Cape Coral, Fla.) is ranked No. 1 at 184 pounds in the NJCAA rankings. Minto (10-1) was ranked second in the preseason rankings. Minto, who was fifth at the NJCAA meet as a freshman, has won titles at the Simpson College Invitational and the Coe College Invitational this season.

For the record: Freshman Shakheim Chapman (Gumee, Ill.) is 11-4 at 197 pounds … freshman Sam Solis (Clarion, Iowa) is 9-6 at 141/149 pounds … sophomore Alex Stockton (Gardner, Ia.) is 6-5 at 285 pounds.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

What’s next: The NIACC men’s and women’s indoor track teams open their seasons at the Panther Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Jan. 12.

Men’s top returners: Trent Smith (Charles City, Iowa) placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run (15 minutes, 19.81 seconds) at the NJCAA national indoor meet in 2012 and Trey Taylor (Bloomfield, Conn.) placed fifth in the weight throw with a school-record toss of 51 feet, 11 inches.

Women’s top returners: Emily Burchett (Mayview, Mo.) placed fifth in the weight throw with a school record toss of 52-10 ¾ at the NJCAA national indoor meet in 2012 and Hillary Garvey (Hudson, Iowa) was 12th in the 600-meter run (1:43.37).
