Face the Facts USA –

Americans wasted 33.79 million tons of food in 2010, enough to fill 91 Empire State Buildings, and a 16 percent increase from a decade ago. The average American wastes 209 to 254 pounds of edible food each year. Meanwhile, more than 17 million American households were considered “food insecure” in 2010, meaning it was difficult to provide enough food for everyone in the family. Forty-six million Americans, about one in seven people, relied on food stamps.

  1. We live in a litigation happy society! Every speck of non-eaten food has the possibility of a frivilous lawsuit hanging over the plate ! Get it?

P.S. What about those folks that get a food stamp card and sell it for cash to get drugs, alcohol & cigarettes?

  2. The local Senior citizens in MC serves a noon meal 5 days a week. Many cannot eat the whole meal. They are not allowed to take one iota of food home, It is dumpted in the garbage! They are one of the biggest food wasters in town and no one has an answer as to why. The same meals are also delivered to several other places in the city, including Autumn Park. Meals from those places can be taken home. Matt, maybe you could find some answers to this waste. Many are disturbed by it but it seems answers are not forthcoming.
