Iowa State Downs South Dakota, 7-0

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State soccer team had little issue with South Dakota in a 7-0 win Sunday at the ISU Soccer Complex.  Sophomore Ashley Johnson led the way for the Cyclones with three assists and a goal for a career-high five-point game. Sophomore Hayley Womack also had a stand-out performance with a career-best two goals.

The seven goals was the second time this season the Cyclones have had that much offensive output.  Iowa State defeated Northern Iowa 7-1 on Sept. 4 at the ISU Soccer Complex.

The shutout was Iowa State’s fifth of the campaign.

Iowa State (8-4 overall, 0-1 Big 12) started the scoring in the 12th minute when Womack converted a breakaway that was started by a nice pass from Johnson.  The goal was Womack’s second of the season.

Junior Jennifer Dominguez doubled Iowa State’s advantage 19:48 into the match when she headed in a cross from Johnson. The Cyclones would take their 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Cyclones did not take their foot off the pedal in the second half, as they went on to score five goals.

Junior Jessica Stewart fired in a long-range effort 3:44 into the second half for her second goal of the season. Iowa State added to its lead when Womack scored her second goal of the day at the 52:29 mark, off a Johnson assist.

Johnson scored a goal of her own 57:02 into the match off an assist from Erin Green.  Johnson scored from an acute angle for second tally of the season.

Junior Emily Goldstein found the back of the net with just under 10 minutes remaining to stretch Iowa State’s lead to 7-0.  The goal was Goldstein’s fourth of the season. Sophomore Kaeli Flaska put the finishing touches on the rout when she expertly headed in a goal off a cross from Susie Potterveld with 7:40 left in the match.

Sophomore Andrea Swanson played the full 90 minutes at goalkeeper and notched her first shutout of the season.  Swanson’s season record improved to 2-1 with the win.

The Cyclones return to Big 12 play in their next match when they travel to No. 7 Oklahoma State Friday for a 7 p.m. match.
