KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A gunman shot a Kansas City Royals parking lot employee Friday afternoon outside Kauffman Stadium and then killed himself.

The victim was working in Lot A about 3:20 p.m. CDT when the attacker, believed to be her boyfriend or former boyfriend, approached with a gun, Kansas City police said.

The gunman shot her once in the abdomen and returned to his car a short distance away, where he shot and killed himself. He died at the scene. The woman was in critical condition and underwent surgery at a hospital.

Both the gunman and victim were in their 40s, police said. They said the victim had a day job and worked at the stadium to supplement her income.

The parking lots were closed temporarily as stadium workers began to arrive for Friday night’s game, but the game was played as scheduled.
