(Mason City) – The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health is excited to announce the return of the Walking School Bus Program this fall.
The Walking School Bus Program utilizes adult volunteers to supervise children as they walk to school. The program is aimed to increase physical activity among students, reduce traffic around the schools and offer parents a safe means for their child(ren) to travel to school. The Walking School Bus Routes will be established within one mile of the schools and will allow children living along the routes to join the supervised group, as the walking school buses pass their house. For children who live outside of the walking routes, designated Walking Bus Stops will be identified for children to be dropped off to join the group. Participating elementary schools are Clear Creek Elementary (in Clear Lake), Harding Elementary, Hoover Elementary, Jefferson Elementary and Roosevelt Elementary (all in Mason City). Students can register for the Walking School Bus Program at their school registrations or online at http://www.cghealth.com.
The Walking School Bus Program is made possible through the partnerships of the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health, Mason City Community School District and the Clear Lake Community School District through grants awarded from the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School program and The Wellmark Foundation.
Interested adult volunteers are encouraged to register online at http://www.cghealth.com to serve as a Walking School Bus Leader. Volunteers are encouraged to be available at least 1-2 days a week from 7:00-8:00 AM.
“The Walking School Bus program has been a wonderful addition to our communities,” states Kelli Huinker, Program Coordinator. “This is a great opportunity for adults to serve as positive role models to students and volunteer for their community. And the kids absolutely love the program; it’s a great way for everyone to start their day the active way.”

With all the sex offenders running around North Iowa. I would not trust anyone to walk my kids to school. It might be the last time you see them. This is a very dangerous idea. How does a parent know they have ran back ground checks on these people?
