This goes way beyond pathetic, past ludicrous and unimaginable. Think for a moment; go back to another time, a time when we had people in place in City Hall who were responsible, who were sober thinking, who were open with the community, it wasn’t that far back, just back before Eric Bookmeyer pulled into town with his meal ticket sitting next to him in the car.
Was it fate that brought this man into our midst, if it was it was a very dark day for everyone in North Iowa. Was it fate that put this six member council at his disposal, if it was it was disastrous for this city.
To understand the severity of this situation you must first be able to grasp what it must be like for the twelve sanitation workers and their families to one day realize that their job and livelihood is on the line. The Globe Gazette, or more correctly, those who run it are on board with all of this; they are trying their best with whatever vestige of credibility they may have left to board the bus Eric is driving.
How did we get here? How? You all know the answer to that; no one voted, you all stayed home to watch the ball game on that day. That my friends is exactly what happened. Shame on all of you who did not vote. There is a segment in this city who count on that; when Don Nelson and Jeff Marsters decided not to run for re-election and Max Weaver got beat, we all lost big time. I mean BIG TIME.
Every community has a “fabric” to it, a sense of decency that engulfs it, that protects its own. That no longer exists here and hasn’t since Eric took office and handcrafted his brain dead council. Do I hear a cry of protest arising from the community declaring we are dissatisfied with the way things are now? No I do not. Have you called your council person to protest? Chances are you have not.
This same pretender will drop $65,000.00 to move his desk or take a group to Washington to eat lunch on your dime and spend thousands more of your dollars…then want to axe 12 city positions to make you think he’s concerned with your tax dollars. How much city money did Eric and his special panel spend traveling around looking at civic centers? Plenty. This would be like Hitler bringing in a plumber to check the shower heads to make sure they are working…no difference. Bookmeyer is not a bad joke, if that were all he was we could recover but he’s much more than that, he’s a deadly disease one that could do serious harm to this community. We’ve got ourselves a real Dr. Josef Mengele operating on the infrastructure of our city. Wake up for Christ’s sake; is this what we’ve come to?
We’re paying $9.00 a month, do any of you really think it could go lower than that? If it went to 7 or 8 how long do you think that would last? And what would you save, $12.00 a year and for that we’d throw twelve families into the toilet….is that it? Maybe that’s in your DNA but it’s sure in the hell is not in mine.

whats wrong reggie didn’t beermeyer kiss you goodnight or maybe you just dont like his beer breath. You have never seen one thing wrong with this group in office which means your one of them or just a bent over wannabee.
I see things that the council and Mayor do that I don’t necessarily agree with BUT I don’t second guess everything they do because they are trying. What I will always take issue with is immature and juvenile personal attacks on any of them. Just like the immature and juvenile post you just wrote.
How is he out of control? Because he’s looking at whether the city is getting the best service for the money? Yes, we pay $9 a month for trash but our water rates are three times as high as any other city around here so there goes the savings. And what does his wife have to do with anything? This is just an angry article and any valid point it may have made was muddled by the toxicity and anger of the words.
Here are the answers to the Peter quiz.
Peter is like Jeffrey Dahmer because Peter likes to “butcher” the English language and Dahmer likes to …well you know the rest.
Peter is like Ted Bundy because Ted was a “lady killer” and Peter thinks he is.
And last but not least,John Wayne Gacy and Peter are very much alike because they both play a “clown” in their spare time.
Hilarious! Reggie for Mayor!
Reggie:
You are spot on. Your take on Peter Children is dead on the mark. Can’t get any more truthful than what you said!
…REAL ANONYMOUS…where do your brains hang out? It’s been said often enough that Trout makes more than $140,000 per year, not including more than $10,000 in benefits.
I’ve been chastized for blogging and no longer living in Mason City. If you read NIT enough even you and the other “dummies” can figure out you aren’t smart enough to think on your own. The city is made up of a bunch of dolts, and those who lead the brain dead around like a dog on a leash,i.e. Bookmeyer, Marinos, Robin, Stangler, Berrglan, Rahn…
Truer words were never spoken. Spot on. Keep it up.
SIJR:
I too hear the same thing from these people. I moved some time ago and brushed the dust of that crummy town off my shoes. Only reason I keep track is to see just what piece of stupidness is about to happen. And as usual, I am never let down. It’s like that bad train wreck; you just can’t help but to look.
You are right about the dolts and the brain dead comment. Dead on the mark!!
Really?!? If we’re all dolts and morons why even comment on here. Sounds like wherever you are isnt working out for you. So maybe your the crummy one not this town.
To rockyramjet (A.K.A. anal plug):
Trust me, where I am at is working out just fine. Reason I comment on here is to see if a dolt/moron like you has the ability to reply in a coherent manner……to which you failed with flying colors.
I am so sick of people complaining about how many hours the samitation workers work. Who cares???? Hasn’t anybody every heard of being salaried? I’m sure there are times they work more, like large item pick up days, the weeks that there are holidays, etc. Trout is salaried and how about complaining about that! He’s making over 100 grand a year. and I’m sure he’s not putting in his full 40 hours a week either.
I care. And by the way, these workers are hourly, so on the weeks when they put in more than 40 hours, they receive overtime pay.
When Jolas started this system, it was a form of bribery to get employees to do their job. I shouldn’t have to subsidize the workers to ensure that garbage isn’t strewn across the road or to ensure that they don’t engage in a work slowdown if they don’t get their way.
An honest day’s wage for an honest day’s work–that is all I ask–put in 40 hours for 40 hours’ pay.
Kind of funny that everyone complains about how much the supervisors make for a part-time job–these sanitation workers make just as much for their part-time job!
But, here’s the question….would you be able to do their job? People complain about how much they make instead of being grateful for how affordable your rates are. They work hard!!! Hard for those hours that they do put it. Probably getting 10 hours of work done in a shorter time. Not to mention, when it’s 40 below wind chills, dealing with other people’s trash, which is pretty gross, dealing with lord knows what in those bags. They are exposed to the weather elements, exposed to disease, and have to listen to residents bitch about having to seperate the cardboard from the rest of the recycling. So maybe for the ungrateful people out there when the negotiations are being done, the city should say to consider their wages “salaried”. Stop complaining about how MANY hours they work and consider how HARD they work during their shifts. And appreciate the service you don’t have to pay more than ten bucks a month for.
Well, Pete you got the troops stirred up. Good job! The article is spot on.
Now here is the rub. The voters didn’t vote and as you point out Max is no longer there to protect us.
Curries fired Marsters just as soon as he was out of office. He should have run again to protect his job. He learned the hard way.
I wish I knew how to get the Voters educated to vote in the correct direction. As it stands the Globe Gazette has kept the voters so dumb-ed down that they are complacent and without hope.
Then you have another Bookmeyer monkey like Reggie that can’t handle the truth. He don’t like it that the folks are sooooooooo unhappy with Reggie,Drunkmeyer, and his whole gang!!!
Keep up the pressure!!!!! The folks are learning.
Watchdog. Your information is incorrect. Marsters was let go before the election. I am glad to see you don’t have to be truthful to blog or write a oped on this sight.
Sorry about that time line, it’s a minor memory mistake. The point is, Curies fired him as soon as he was no longer a player on the city council. Curries was never happy that Marsters ran and was elected.
As soon as he was vulnerable they pulled the plug on him. He became vulnerable as soon as he announced he was not running for re-election.
Curries is the not the good citizen everyone thinks they are. Glad they are here but lets keep this in perspective.
To stay on topic, Children’s article while hard hitting is right on point.
Let’s impeach Bookmeyer and anoint you emperor. You have all the answers, all the women, all the knowledge. All we ask is for you to lead us. You pompous ass. You couldn’t lead toilet paper down the drain.
Reggie shut the F up or those 12 families will git ya! Anyone with a stable thought process knows he’s an ass and stupid above all. You love him just like you love Max. Different kind of love like a wife and a girlfriend. Get outta here!
Peter has this analogy spot on. The plague of Boozeblower will spread through each city department until there is none left. The only people left working at cityhall will be Trout and Sandall and a secretary. I sure hope the $80K to move the walls is worth it for them.
Peter is right the mayor has not brought anything to Mason city in the form of good leadership. The employees are on edge the people think their elected officials are taking their waqlking orders from a special interest group in town. The garbage thing is the lastest joke this city has taken on 9.60 a month for service and you talk about eliminating it, get real. Anybody point out another city in Iowa getting your garbage, recycling and unlimited yard waste picked-up at the curb once a weeek for less. This doesn’t even include the large item pickup.
rukidding. If what you are saying is true. Then the sanitation dept. has nothing to worry about then do they? But you are wrong. 9.6 x 10000 homes is 96,000 a month x 12 months = 10,520,000 dollars a year. If we were able to save 10 percent. That is over a million dollars in savings to the citizens. Seems like something we should explore in my opinion. Probably not if I was a sanitation worker who worked 6 hours a day and got paid for 10 hours.
You might want to check your math there, Einstein.
I kind of like this game. Here’s another quiz. How is Peter Like Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy? And before all you Peter lovers jump all over me remember Peter is the one that brought up the Hitler/Mengele analogy.
The Globe has an article today about privatized garbage collection, of course the Globe is going to side with whatever Trout and Bookie want. Sickening!
Wow so now Bookmeyer is Adolf Hitler AND Josef Mengele rolled into one.If I’m getting this analogy correct then Don is Ike, Jeff is Patton and Max is …..Omar Bradley? No that’s not it,maybe …..Charles De Gaulle ? No I think I have figured it out Peter. Max is Rasputin?
Reggie sure is worried about Max and no one heard a peep out of the guy in months. Paranoid to say the very least it seems to this outsider. Why does Max hold such power and control over you, Reggie?
Peter brought Max up,I just commented. Why don’t you ask Peter the same question about Bookmeyer?
Garbage is a loss-leader. It costs more than $9.00 per month. If residence were charged what it actually cost, I bet the bill would be $30 a month.
You might be right. What Peter is missing in his argument is accountability of the sanitation dept.Lets figure out what it is actually costing us.Like you said I bet its not $9 a month but if it is ,GREAT, we are getting a heck of a deal. While some might lose their jobs,if in fact they are not this low and a private company can beat them, most would just fill positions in other departments that haven’t been filled.
I heard there are four positions on the police force that are not filled; what makes you think that these men would fill other slots? You think but you do not know.
Why don’t you run for the office then? You have the most critical remarks of anyone on this site about what a poor job Mayor Bookmeyer does. Apparently, you are the only one smart enough to do the job and do it correctly then. Maybe its (past) time for you to put your money where your mouth has been for so long. And, let me save you the excuse that you are too old for the job, because that is all that is…an excuse. If you can be so malicious and spew so much hatred for someone then maybe you would enjoy having the same thing done to you. What say you?
If PC ran for office it would be a landslide victory for him and he probably doesn’t want the headache of being a bigger celebrity than he already is. The man is in his late 70’s and still has women crawling all over him, how much more does he need? Plus that would murder the mayor’s already fragile ego, and PC is way too nice a guy to humiliate the man that way. Let’s just thank God that Peter is here to point out the truths the dumb voters can’t understand.
Please read my “Top Ten Reasons Peter won’t run for Mayor” in a previous post. But your reasons were pretty funny too.
Wow, I didn’t know Peter was that old. No wonder why he has so much time to post on this website.
This man’s wife is a medical doctor, he’s s stay at home mom, or at least that is what he said. There is nothing wrong with that, but my friend, he’s screwing up this town, he’s out of control and he’s got a free hand to do what he wants. It’d be different if he knew what he was doing but he does not. Not a clue.
How would you like to pick up trash, how about when it’s below zero, or 100 drgrees outside? If they might make a few dollars more it still wouldn’t be enough.
There are a lot of jobs that require employees to be outside in the cold and in the heat. I can’t think of any of them that pay the equivalent of two full days’ pay for dealing with the elements–especially when making a decent wage with good benefits to start!
Ever see what a railroad worker makes? They are out in all sorts of weather year round. They actually get paid more than the Sanitation folks.
I am not envious of others who make more than me. Heck, it is a good thing for the whole community when we have workers making more money.
A community that has a majority of it’s population making $9 an hour workers cannot function. No way, no how. Yet that is what you all seem to be looking for.
My question for you: Are you willing to replace the money they put into the local economy when they move some place else? Best believe those $9/hr workers could not afford it.
I work in the private industry, and have had to worry about job cuts, pay reductions, and an overall loss to my pocketbook. Why should an employee of the government have more job protection than those of us employed privately? I do feel the city government has fiscal accountability to its citizens.
Peter, in my opinion, you are losing your credibility. I don’t know the mayor or his family personally, but I think it’s downright unprofessional in the manner in which you write about him. In fact, I often don’t read many of your pieces any longer.
Base your articles on facts that you can backup, rather than your opinion. In other words, put your money where your mouth is.
See my response above. No two jobs are alike. The person who opens your chest and repairs your heart should get paid more than the one who wheeled you into the room. Each job is different and collecting garbage is not easy work, its back breaking. These people are not sitting in some office.
