Iowa State men’s hoops 24th nationally in attendance

AMES, Iowa – The NCAA announced its annual men’s basketball Division I attendance leaders this afternoon, and Iowa State yet again produced one of the nation’s best season totals.

Iowa State averaged 13,015 fans per home game in 2011-12, a total which ranked 24th nationally. Kentucky was the nation’s overall leader at 23,721.

This season marks just the second time Iowa State has averaged more than 13,000 fans since 1993.

The Cyclones tallied a 23-11 overall record and a 12-6 league mark while advancing to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2005 last season. Fans came in droves to watch the exciting action in Hilton Coliseum, as Iowa State sold out three of the last four home games and a total of five home contests.

Second-year head coach Fred Hoiberg helped energize a fan-base, as “Hilton Magic” was back in full force. The Cyclones went 16-2 at home last season, including winning their final eight Big 12 home games, the fourth-best streak in school history. Iowa State defeated two top-10 teams at home (Kansas and Baylor) for the first time since 1992.
