By Rong-Gong Lin II, Los Angeles Times –

LOS ANGELES — A magnitude-6.9 earthquake shook Baja California early Thursday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, but no tsunami was expected to strike California or elsewhere.

The earthquake, which occurred at 12:15 a.m., was centered about 360 miles southeast of San Diego, on the western edge of the Gulf of California.

A smaller quake, a magnitude-6.2, shook the same area of Mexico at 12:06 a.m.

The perceived shaking was described as “very strong” close to the epicenter, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
