WASHINGTON D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that three Iowa fire departments have been awarded a total of $391,512 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFT) program. Harkin is a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, which funds the Department of Homeland Security. The funding will go toward operations and safety.
“Firefighters protect the homes and businesses in our communities and contribute to the overall safety their residents,” said Harkin. “I am pleased that funding will go to the protective services and operations in Atlantic, Garwin, and Independence.”

Atlantic Fire Department-$228,475
Garwin Volunteer Fire Department-$25,192
Independence Fire Department-$137,845
