INDIANOLA, Iowa – The NIACC Men’s Golf team faced tough windy conditions as they opened the 2012 spring season with a fifth place finish at the Simpson Invitational held in Indianola.
Freshman Brent Tarr (Clear Lake, IA) led NIACC with a 74, which tied him for fourth-place. He was two shots off of the individual winning score set by Johnny Schwaller of the American Institute of Business (AIB).
“Brent did a great job of getting out of some trouble and he always does a great job of scrambling,” NIACC golf coach Chris Frenz said. “He had good control of the driver all day and made a lot of putts. The only thing that hurt him was his short game.”
NIACC’s team score of 320 was 21 shots behind meet winner Wartburg (299). DMACC (302), AIB (312) and the Coe Crimson team (319) also placed ahead of NIACC.
Dalton Olson (Fr., Mason City) had the second best day for the Trojans with a 79, which put him in 16th place in the 78 person field.
“Dalton kind of cobbled together a good opening 6 holes, then struggled a bit in the middle, before putting it together again at the end to finish strong,” Frenz said. “I think overall, he was ok with his performance.”
Brandon Wood’s (So., Rudd, IA) 83, Jacob Urdahl’s (Fr., Mason City, IA) 84, and Adam Brinkman’s (So., Clear Lake, IA) 86 rounded out the scoring for NIACC.
“I like the way our team battled and we know the number three, number four ,and number five guys are all capable of shooting much better rounds,” Frenz said. “To come in here and get a fifth place finished against this quality competition I think is a pretty good accomplishment.”
The Trojans will be at the DMACC Invitational on April 5 in Boone.
