The Iowa Senate unanimously agreed today to change some unsavory terminology in its code.
References to mental retardation as “retarded” in Iowa’s law would be replaced with “intellectual disability.” The Iowa House still has to approve the bill.
See how lobbyists weighed in on the measure.
It sure seems like they should have more important things to tend to than changing wording. It’s just a descriptive word just like the new one. Pises me off that I am helping to pay their wages.
What the hell will we call these senators now?? This is retarded!!!
This is crazy… in 20 years the term “itellectual disability” will be unsavory and socially unacceptable and we will have to change it again. Changing the wording gives more “power” to the word instead of its initial defined intention.
