Garage fire Sunday morning in Mason City

In the dark, early morning hours of Sunday morning a garage went up in a blaze. At approximately 4:15 a.m., the Mason City Fire Department was dispatched to 316 9th Street SE. A neighbor said, “There are three people living there, Clarence Wallace (sp) and his granddaughter and her husband.”

A neighbor to the west said, “Luckily, my husband woke up and realized that our new car was in the driveway and moved it right away.” The heat from the flames were so hot that it started to melt the siding on their garage, as well as the garage belonging to neighbors to the north. Many of the trees that surrounded the garage were singed almost to the top and it killed the neighbors flowers.

Firefighters were able to put the fire out after having to take the hoses from the front on 9th Street to the back, where the garage was located in the alley. Smoke filled the neighborhood, but was cleared by 7:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation

The neighbor talked to Clarence and said, “He (Clarence) believes it might have started from the grill, but he’s not sure.”

Many of the photos and video are hard to see because of the darkness of the morning and the smoke of the fire.
