If you were driving past the Harley Davidson Store on South Federal Saturday afternoon, you probably saw girls holding signs and getting around on rollerskates. These girls are the Dames of Anarchy, the new roller derby team for Mason City. They were doing a free Motorcycle/Car Wash in their first public appearance. They were also serving lunch. Good will donations were welcomed for their work.
Two of the girls that were holding signs were Sara, AKA Twisted Thunder and Renee, AKA Sagittar IT UP. The girl cleaning up the motorcycle is Anna, AKA Anamosity. All the girls seemed excited and happy to be part of the team.
The Assistant Coach, Amy, AKA Caped Crusk8r said, “We’ve been staying pretty busy and doing well with the donations. The money from the donations will go towards the rent of the building and for scholarships. It costs a lot to play this sport, we don’t want money to keep the girls from the derby.”
Amy went on to say, “If enough men seem interested, we’d like to start a mens league as well as a youth league.”
The River City Dames of Anarchy (DOA) is the first roller derby team for women in Mason City, according to the team’s coach, Kip Ireland. “We have 11 girls on the team so far and about 7 other referees and other helpers,” he said.
