MASON CITY – NIT has learned of a possible shake-up at the Mason City fire department.
Al Dyer, Mason City Fire Chief, was not at work Tuesday. Nor was he at work Thursday. NIT called both times, seeking comment from Mr. Dyer on whether or not he has been placed on Administrative Leave, and if so, for what reasons.
Thursday afternoon, Deputy Chief David Johnson told NIT that his “marching orders are to not comment on” the situation involving Chief Dyer. He said that only acting City Administrator Kevin Jacobson could comment on the matter.
Mr. Jacobson has informed NIT that Al Dyer remains the city’s Fire Chief. He refused comment, however, when asked if Dyer has been placed on administrative leave from his job. He also refused comment on a number of other questions pertaining to details and possible scenarios NIT sought answers to.
“No comment,” and then silence, is all Mr Jacobson would offer to this point.
NIT has received word of a number of various alleged incidents possibly involving Al Dyer at his workplace, and will continue to investigate the matter.
Al Dyer was hired as the city Fire Chief after former chief Bob Platts retired as from the position in 2016. The City of Mason City accepted applications and conducted interviews with the top four candidates for the position on July 19, 2016. The interviews included an assessment panel interview from 3 current Iowa Fire Chiefs conducted by Cayler Consulting LLC. The candidates also had separate interviews with department directors, a team from Mercy Hospital and the city administrator.
Dyer came to Mason City from Lincoln Park, Michigan. He had been fire chief there since 2014. He was not at the fire station this evening when a call was made, seeking comment.

No idea what this is, but if it what’s rumored, what a great hire by the council. And who is this so-called ‘consultant’ “Cayler Consulting LLC”? No phone number, no web site to be found. Business as usual in city hall.
Too often these search firms are a waste of resources.
