Commentary: North End
The North End of Mason City isn’t the end of the world, but you can see it from there. Today’s Globe-Gazette reported on another so called neighborhood meeting attended by 3 council persons. These gathering are the same as doing penance for taking compensation in the form of wages from the city for doing nothing. This council has done nothing….not a damn thing that can be seen at least after what… 14 years of talk and promises?
The 800 pound gorilla in the room isn’t lack of paint and elbow grease….its dope. There are rumors here that this city has a “drug task force.” Really? Where is it? Are they going to bring it out to march in the Band Festival Parade? These people suffer from the NIACC syndrome. We know it’s there but we need to study it for several years until we retire. Then someone else can study it further. They could bring in an “under-cover” agent in here from Des Moines to make enough buys to open there very own drug store….then close them up.
Stop with the broken down buildings; there are laws on the books that state if it can be proven drugs are being sold in the house you are renting, the authorities can confiscate the property. They can then sell that property and use the proceeds to fight crime. If I were one of those three council persons who attended that meeting I’d have been too embarrassed to show up.

Why don’t you organize something like this, North Iowa Today? https://www.stlouisfed.org/publications/bridges/winter-20102011/a-new-face-for-an-old-broad
Do you really think the Chamber of Commerce and the city government in Mason City would ever allow something like that. If they can’t make money off it they are not interested.
My neighbors sell drugs, and yes the owner of the house knows about it. There was a search at the house after the tenants were caught with drugs with intent during a traffic stop. Irritates the heck out of me that the owners did nothing.
Thank you for speaking up. Under these conditions I can understand the need to remain anonymous. As such would you revel the name of the owner of the house?
If these dealers were caught, as you say, what happened? Why no charges? Why would they get a free pass? The home owner got a big free pass, knowing there name might tell us all something?
Really? Money under the table. Do you mean to certain contractors, who, council members. Please explain.
I’d lay a bet the mayor is taking cash from anyone who will give it out. That’s my opinion. The man has no job. He relies on his wife and the public for sustenance. God only knows how many crumpled up benjamins have been slid across the table, concealed in bar napkins, for the mayor to take and buy booze with. I think he’s using those new beer dispensers at Target Field. And we already know for sure he stole stamps and invitations from city hall for his “private” luncheon. Remember, where there’s smoke, there be fire.
I am wondering just where and when the North End meeting was/ I live in the North End and knew nothing about it as did none of my neighbors. Was there a reason for not letting us know. I have always attended every other meeting.
Actually the 800 pound gorilla in the room is “who is going to make the money” when we re-develop the north end. Currently none of the downtown elite in the Chamber and City Hall have any money invested or nothing to gain.
History teaches us in Mason City that it’s WHO is going to benefit that pushes the project.
Dope is only a bi-product because of the in-attention to the north end.
Get some money flowing under the table and watch things start happeining!!!!!It’s how it works.
