Morrissey and Netten earn Big 12 honors

logo_iowa_state_cyclonesAMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior defensive end Cory Morrissey and sophomore placekicker Cole Netten were honored by the Big 12 Conference for their outstanding performances in the Cyclones’ 20-17 win at Iowa on Saturday.

Morrissey was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week and Netten was tabbed as the Big 12’s Special Teams Player of the Week.

A native of Ames, Iowa, Morrissey was instrumental in ISU’s second-straight win in Kinnick stadium by registering career highs in tackles (7), tackles for loss (3.0) and sacks (2.0). Morrissey, who ranks second in the Big 12 in sacks with 3.5, notched his impressive stats going against All-American right tackle Brandon Scherff.

Morrissey was an honorable mention All-Big 12 performer in 2013 and is on the watch list for the Lott Impact Trophy.

Netten, who hails from Ankeny, Iowa, was the late-game hero for the Cyclones, drilling a 42-yard field goal with 0:02 seconds left to secure the victory.

Netten was successful on both of his field goal attempts in the game, connecting on a career-long 47-yarder in the first half. He also made both of his PAT attempts.

It marks the second consecutive week where a Cyclone earned the Big 12’s top special teams performer. Senior Jarvis West was the recipient last week after returning a punt 82 yards for a touchdown vs. Kansas State.
