Iowa doctor accused of abusing 5-year-old granddaughter sent to prison

COUNCIL BLUFFS – An Iowa doctor accused of sexually abusing his 5-year-old granddaughter has been sent to prison.

Dennis S. Jones, M.D., a 69-year-old Iowa-licensed physician who formerly practiced pediatrics in Council Bluffs, Iowa, entered into a combined Statement of Charges and Settlement Agreement on June 6, 2014. On May 20, 2013, Dr. Jones was charged with the crime of Felony B Second Degree Sexual Abuse for engaging in sex acts with a person under the age of twelve – a five year old female reported by authorities to be his granddaughter – in violation of Iowa Code section 709.3(2). Resolution of the charges is pending in court. The abuse allegedly began at some point after October of 2007 and lasted through May of 2013.

Court documents say that the young girl told her mother that she did not want to go to her grandfather’s house on May 12, 2013 because he “tortures” her. She told her mother that her grandfather “rubs” on her, and demonstrated the act to her mother, who subsequently contacted police.

On August 15, 2014, Jones was sentenced to 121 months in prison on federal child pornography charges in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, announced United States Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt. Dr. Jones was also ordered to serve ten years of supervised release after imprisonment, to pay a $100,000 fine, and to pay $100 to the Crime Victims Fund.

Jones pled guilty on May 23, 2014, to knowingly possessing child pornography that included images of a prepubescent child or children under 12 years of age. On May 16, 2013, officers of the Council Bluffs, Iowa, Police Department executed a search warrant at Jones’ residence in Council Bluffs. During forensic analysis of seized computers, external hard drives and other electronic equipment, law enforcement located an estimated 1.2 million images and 9,200 videos of child pornography, including pornography containing minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

At the time of the plea of guilty, Jones was a duly licensed pediatrician who practiced in a clinic in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The case was investigated by law enforcement agents with the Council Bluffs, Iowa, Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations. The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
