Bicyclist injured at intersection after failing to yield to traffic

MASON CITY – A man was hurt Sunday when he rode his bike through an intersection with a bike path and was struck by a motorist.

On Sunday at about 2:00 PM, bicyclist Daniel Worden was riding a bicycle eastbound on the bike path in 4100 block of 19th Street SW. At the same time, a vehicle driven by Jean Anderson of Mason City was also eastbound in the 4100 block of 19th SW and turned south on to Eisenhower as Worden rode his bicycle. Police said that Worden’s bicycle collided with the rear fender of Anderson’s car. The bicycle trail has a yield sign posted at this intersection for bicyclists to yield to vehicular traffic before entering the intersection.

Worden had an injury and was said to be unconscious for a time, but was not transported by the fire department to a hospital. At the scene, Worden could be seen holding a bloody towel to his head, but seemed to be okay.

No citations were issued.

Well, bikers – I hope you’ve learned a valuable lesson from all of this. Aaaah – Nope!

…I certainly hope the bike rider is Ok, but I have to say that I distinctly remember the article in the Globe saying the “we” auto owners have to really pay attention to bike riders now that the city has/had painted “sharos (sp)” on the streets. I remember thinking that the article never said “anything” about bikers paying “equal” attention…just sayin’

@Law Steward-Mostly they just need to obey the laws of the roads. Then they will be safe.

I was wondering when this was going to happen on this bike trail. There still are bicycle riders that don’t think that they have to obey traffic signs/lights. Can’t wait for this to happen on one of our high dollar, already fading, newly painted sharrow streets.

I think it is also wrong for the city to post a sign on 12th street NW by Curries to tell bikes it is ok to use full lane. When I saw that sign, I was thinking there is going to be an accident hers some day, that is a 45 MPH zone.

I’ll bet the guy on the bike thought he had the right of way because he was on a bike.

Saved 1.000 by not jumping into the ambulance

Too bad the City council didnt spend some extra tax money to paint the bike symbols on the highway, probably could have avoided this accident (sarcasm).
Glad the guy is OK
